MORE PEOPLE, BUT ALSO THE MOST BEAUTY.
A quarter of England’s population, approximately 16 million people, reside in this highly developed and densely populated region of the UK. Around 8 million of these individuals are in Greater London.
Despite its urban density, the southeast offers numerous attractions for walkers. This region boasts beautiful coastlines, diverse inland landscapes, numerous rivers and waterways, and a network of accessible urban walking routes.
These paths, located in and around London, connect parklands and waterside areas with intriguing heritage sites. Beyond the bustling urban areas of Greater London and the developed stretches along the south coast, there are seemingly remote countryside and coastal areas. These feature continuous ridges, striking cliffs, and peaceful walks along tranquil canals and lush riversides.
LONDON
Starting with the most densely populated area, Greater London, six major trails form the core of the capital’s Strategic Walks Network. These include two orbital routes: the outer London Loop around the suburbs, and the closer-in Capital Ring. The Jubilee Walkway links major tourist sites in the city, with riverside walking available on the Thames Path National Trail and the Lea Valley Walk. The Green Chain Walk, a network in southeast London, and the Jubilee Greenway route, marking the 2012 Games and Diamond Jubilee, complete the six.

The region’s extensive coastline offers memorable cliff-top walks and gentler options. The Saxon Shore Way in Kent traces the ancient Saxon coastline into Sussex, featuring the iconic White Cliffs. The South Downs Way includes the challenging Seven Sisters cliffs at its eastern end, while the Isle of Wight Coastal Path encircles the island.
